In the apparel industry, achieving the “perfect fit” is both an art and a science. The Fit Sample stage is the most crucial step in the sampling process for ensuring that a garment not only looks good on a hanger but also performs correctly on a human body.
The Primary Purpose of a Fit Sample
Unlike a Proto Sample (which focuses on the initial design concept), a Fit Sample is all about technical accuracy. It is used to validate the pattern, the grading (sizing), and the overall drape of the fabric. By testing the garment on a fit model, designers and technicians can see how the fabric behaves during movement and make necessary adjustments to the tech pack.
Key Elements Scrutinized During a Fit Session
At Five Oceans, our technical team follows a rigorous checklist during every fit session to ensure no detail is overlooked:
| Inspection Category | What We Evaluate |
|---|---|
| Balance | Does the garment hang straight? Is there any twisting in the side seams or sleeves? |
| Ease | Is there enough room for movement? Is the garment too tight or too loose in key areas like the chest, hips, or armholes? |
| Symmetry | Are the left and right sides identical? Are pockets, seams, and details perfectly aligned? |
| Drape & Silhouette | How does the fabric fall? Does the garment achieve the intended look and shape? |
| Functionality | Can the wearer sit, walk, and move comfortably? Do zippers and buttons function correctly in relation to the fit? |
Fit Sample vs. PP Sample: What’s the Difference?
It is a common misconception that a Fit Sample and a Pre-Production (PP) Sample are the same. While both are prototypes, they serve different roles in the production timeline:
- Fit Sample: Focuses on shape and size. It is often made in “available” fabric (muslin or a similar weight substitute) to save costs and time during the iterative design phase.
- PP Sample: Focuses on final execution. It MUST be made with the actual bulk fabric, trims, labels, and packaging. It is the “Golden Sample” for the production line.
